The Bookstore's Backstory

No Dearth of Books was founded by longtime Gig Harbor bookseller, Harry Dearth. Harry's bookshop has long been a beloved harbor fixture. Upon his retirement in 2011, the bookstore came under the ownership of Guy and Martha Johnson. The store moved to its new location at Neptune's Court on Pioneer Way in Downtown Gig Harbor.

The bookstore has kept its emphasis on Nautical and Pacific Northwest titles and a dedication to personalized customer service. It continues to expand with more books, events and online activities.

A Family Affair

The Johnsons have long dreamed of having a family business. And No Dearth of Books is very much a family affair.

Martha and Guy moved to Gig Harbor in 2009 after spending a year living in Lakebay on the Key Peninsula. Previously, they lived and worked in upstate New York. Martha retired from a position as Director of Interpretive Programming at Genesee Country Village and Museum, a living history museum. She remains active in the history field though participation in professional societies and volunteering at the Harbor History Museum. Guy retired soon after from his position as Professor in Multidisciplinary Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is now spending time enjoying new opportunities and activities in this area.

They are assisted in the store by their daughter Sarah, who has a background in classics and history, son Devin, a bio-statistician, and daughter-in-law Shea, a wildlife biologist and educator.
